My Favourite Organizing Tips

Organizing a to do list

My to do list has not only been intimidating but also overwhelming. Things to do were listed randomly and whenever I looked at the list it just looked like random words written with no structure, priority or order whatsoever.

So here's what I did. I sorted activities into action - based - categories like CALL, EMAIL, PAY, FOLLOWUP, VISIT, PURCHASE, SCHEDULE and most importantly DELEGATE !

Now I can look at my TO-DO list more objectively and when I take up CALL for instance, I pick my phone and make all calls at a go.

I use a pencil and eraser so that I can reuse the same sheet.

So Try to organize your TO-DO list today!

Travel Organizing

Cabin Luggage with 360 degrees rotating wheels.
Hi friends, today I am going to show you how I organize all my travel requirements. While traveling  is fun and exciting to me, it also brings an overwhelm about packing and managing the trip.  Let me show you how organizing a trip can help ease your travel experience.

Luggage:-It pays heavily to invest in the best quality luggage. I personally prefer luggage like the one shown in the picture on the left for cabin luggage. A  must have feature for me is the 4 wheels that rotate 360 degrees for maximum comfort. I don't prefer bags whose weight I have to carry in my hands or on my shoulders. If you are very tall ensure the handle of the suitcase pull up long enough.
Packing Cubes:-Once you have great quality luggage, its nice to have smaller bags to hold items like clothes, shoes, cosmetics etc.Its a good idea to have a cute luggage tag to identify your bag.

Using packing cubes to organize inside your suitcase
Its a good idea to use packing cubes to sort and manage your luggage items.

There are many packing cubes available in market of different sizes to organize your luggage within the suitcase. When you use packing cubes, it is easy to sort, group, pack and unpack your luggage.

Other travel accessories:-
Tabbed organizer for travel documents
Organize travel documents:-Lets start with this tabbed organizer which will help you organize your travel documents.

I labeled the tabs as Passport, Tickets, Boarding Pass, Hotel, Receipts, Insurance, Itinerary and maps. If you set you setup such kind of a system, it will be particularly helpful if you are traveling with dependents.

These are the basic kind of documents that have to be handy during travel. So no more digging into your bag or pockets trying to locate an important travel document when you need to present them. If the trip is official, then you need to ensure all receipts are stored in one place so that you can just clip them and submit.
I have used this system very effectively while my past  travel and it works perfectly for me. You will need to preserve your boarding passes in case you need to claim insurance, so ensure its kept safely.

Seat Pack
Seat Pack, journey essentials:-Next lets take a look at this seat pack. It contains all essential items to ease your travel experience, especially when you are on a long flight/journey. My personal must haves are listed below. You can pack them in this seat pack and carry with you.
Lip Balm, nasal drops, candy, snack bar, medication, tissues, comb, moisturizer, socks, toothbrush paste and comb.

Overnight Case
Overnight Case
Overnight Case:-I love this bag which conveniently converts into an overnight case. This bag can easily carry and organize a towel, daily essential wear, night  dress, cosmetic bag. All essentials that can help you spend a day or so conveniently. If you set up a bag like this, then its just grab - n - go for a short trip.

Space is luxury. When you have to accommodate yourself in minimum space it helps to use vertical space. This cosmetic bag is a good example of usage of vertical space. You can hang this cosmetic holder onto the wall and it rolls up too. This way all your daily essentials are right in front of you and in an organized manner. Moreover its easy to pack up and get going.
Travel Essentials

Organizing a Travel Accessories Kit
Travel Bag
Let me show you how I organize my travel bag. I pack travel size items in clear plastic bags.

15 essential items in your travel Toiletries
Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, scissors, nail cutter, tissue paper, medication, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, rubber bands, hair clips, hair oil, small sewing kit and small first aid kit.

I also put a sticky note on top of the box with an index of items expected in the box so that used items can be replenished. I store this in a small size packing cube which also contains my camera, a light towel, a pair of nightwear, socks, light weight shawl and I am ready to pack quickly for an overnight or a long stay.

So try organizing your next trip and enjoy a stress free travel !

Organizing Electronics

Corral Daily use electronics

Electronics have become an integral part of our daily lives. Each one of us own several electronic items. Along with these items come their chargers and accessories which can be organized effectively. There are several ways to organize electronics.

Here in the left you can see that I have used a caddy to corral my daily electronic items like my tab, chargers, remote, headphones etc.

There are several interesting ways to organize electronics. The method you choose to organize will largely depend on how you use the item and whats easy for you to maintain and follow.

Label and organize chargers
Some may prefer to plug the charger to the electric socket and keep it ready for use anytime, others like me may corral them. I have also seen people using hidden charging stations for example in the draw of a desk or a night stand. This hides the unsightly chords.

Organizing electronic items reduces clutter and also helps identify a central place for storage. In the left hand picture, you can see that I have created a Velcro band which can be used to coil and secure the cable when not in use.

If you see closely I have stitched a small pipeline which holds the wire securely to the Velcro band. The other end of this band can be opened and the charger can be coiled and secured tightly.

Binder clips can be used to organize
wires and cables
You can also see that I have painted 3 red lines with nail polish on the charger socket to identify which side to plug it. Some of the sockets come with identification already printed, while we can label others which don't.
Fish bone to organize headphone

There are several items available in the market to organize wires and cables. In the right you can see a fish bone kind of silicone thing which helps wrap my headphone.
Cord Holders
To the right you can see how
binder clips can be used to organize wires and cable.

Finally I have organized all my electric cables and chords. Let me show how I did it. So the first
Clear Box for electronic accessories
thing I did was gather all electric cables and chords from all over the house and put it in this clear plastic box. This way step 1 was accomplished. Then I put each of these chords in clear plastic bags
and labeled them so that I knew which cable belongs to which electrical item. Once this is done this clear plastic box can be labeled and stored in your utility closet or basement or wherever its handy for you.

Organizing laptop bag

Organizing items in my laptop bag items
Let me show you how I organize my laptop bag. I usually used to dump all associated electricals like chargers etc into the laptop bag. But recently, I found this lovely organizer which holds daily electrical items perfectly! This is an organizer with elastic bands of various dimensions. It has several possibilities and several configuration. I love the fact its multi purpose. You can use it to organize your electrical items, handbag items, travel items or what have you. As you can see in the picture to the left, this organizer holds the following items:-

Add caption
  • Cell Phone
  • Mouse Batteries
  • Mouse
  • Cell Phone Charger
  • Pencil
  • I also put my phone's headset on this.
So organize your laptop bag today!
The picture to the right shows how you can organize your purse items using  this organizer.

Organizing clothes

Hi friends,

During my conversation with many people, most of them have accepted and agreed that their closet is the most important place of the house that needs organizing.Stat.

Garment Rack
Today I am going to show you how I organize clothes. Whether you have a walk in closet or a cupboard or a closet chest or just a suitcase to hold your clothes, organizing them will go a long way to use and maintain the clothes.

You can also color code your hangers with type of clothing.

  • As you can see in the picture above, I have used a commercial, movable garment rack to hold clothes.
  • There are many clothes hanging on this garment rack but they are sorted using closet dividers. These dividers are nothing but cardboard signs which categorize clothes into various categories.

  • There are many types of closet dividers available easily in the market.

  • They come in wooden or plastic material. Some are pre printed and designed while some are plain and you can customize their labels to suit your requirement.
  • You can organize clothes by type of wear for example daily wear, night wear, occassion wear.

  •  For non seasonal or rarely used clothes, you can choose a separate place to store them. The biggest reason for closet overwhelm is that its un-categorized and un-organized, everything dumped together in one place.
  • In case you are wondering whats really is the point in spending so much time to buy and use these dividers, take a look at its distinct advantages
  • Once you sort your clothes like this, imagine you need to see what options you have for a party you are attending next Saturday. You can see all your occasion wear options at one place itself.
  • Moreover once you have worn the clothes, you know exactly where to place them back. In case you need someone else to keep the clothes back on the rack for you, they too know exactly where the clothes go.
  • After your done with a load of laundry and have to place the clothes back, its much easier to put the clothes back. Even kids will be able to maintain this.

Belt Holder
Daily essential wear organizer
There are many closet accessories available in the market that help organize the stuff you keep in it. Below are a few examples. The one to the left is a belt organizer, that helps you organize all your belts. You can just hang it over your closet rod. The belts stay well when organized this way and don't form creases like they do when not stored properly.

Clothes bag
The box to the right is a small clothes organizer. This one is really great and I wonder where it was when I was in school, searching for my socks, handkerchief, hair band, ribbons etc almost everyday ;) One major advantage of this box is that when you pick one item from it, the others remain intact. Unlike when you pull a cloth from a pile, mostly other clothes topple and create a mess which most of us agree that its unmotivating to put the clothes neatly back.

The blue cloth bag to the right is a perfect case to store a pile of clothes. Personally, I use them to store sportswear, seasonal wear and old clothes. They are stackable when in use. They fold flat when not in use.

Saree and Blouse bag
Two well known facts about Indian women. One, they love wearing sarees. Second, they can never have too many sarees. Nothing wrong with this but what when your cupboard is full of them and when you open it, overpacked clothes just fall on you?

Let me show you a cost effective and space saving idea to organize sarees and seasonal clothes.

So here are these sari and blouse holders. The blouse holder contains about 20 blouses and the sari holders around 12. These take up very less space and you can not only use it for sarees but also for gym clothes, swimwear, seasonal clothes, quilts, bedsheets, old clothes made of pure cotton which we Indians use for multi-purpose, pillow covers and what have you.  So get inspired and organize your closet and give a home to all those clothes which are worn seasonally or occassionally.

When space is a constraint, you can use this collapsible hanger which uses vertical space to maximize horizontal space. You can also use this collapsible hanger horizontally to categorize clothes.

There are many several other organizers available in the market in case you have too many of the below.
  • Shoe organizers
    Hand bag organizers
  • Jewelry organizer
  • Tie organizer
  • Cap organizer
  • Watch organizer

There are many of each kind available in the market. You can choose one depending on your budget, space and choice of colors and designs.

Organizing cleaning supplies.

Cleaning Caddy

Here is how I organize cleaning supplies.  I used a handy basket to store cleaning items like:
Items in the cleaning caddy

  • Microfiber cloth for cleaning electronics
  • Microfiber cloth for dusting
  • Hand gloves
  • Microfiber duster
  • Telescopic feather duster
  • Glass cleaning
  • Gas, over cleaner
  • Spray bottle with plain water
  • Paper towels
Arrange all your cleaning supplies in a handy caddy/basket and take it along with you in the room you want to clean. Its time saving and an easy way to clean your house.
Industrial bins for under the sink storage

You can also use area under your kitchen sink for storage of  kitchen cleaning supplies likes assorted sponges, tile cleaners, brushes, soap, baking powder.

These are industrial bins and are perfect for storage in under sink areas.

Organizing laundry area

Hi Friends,

Laundry area
Today I am going to show you how I organized my laundry area. We all agree laundry is a banal thing to do.  But I assure you organizing your laundry area will make laundry a fun activity to look forward to.You can set up a laundry area in the smallest of spaces.

Tips:

  • Ironing Board and Iron: Here, my ironing board doubles up as a table space for folding clothes. I have kept the iron handily to my right hand side. The electrical input is right there on the wall so I can just plug and start using.
  • Clothes Folder: I cannot imagine my laundry area without my flip clothes folder. You can make a perfect stack of folded clothes using this. It can fold almost any kind of clothing item.

  • Hanging clothes dryer: On the ceiling you can see a small clothes dryer. Its very useful to dry delicate and small items all neatly in one place.
Laundry Area
  • Stain Removal Chart and Kit: I have used the side of this metal cupboard to hang my stain removal chart. On the opposite side of this chart is list of cloth care symbols and their meaning. I stuck 2 magnetic containers on side of the cupboard wall to contain small items we find in clothes pockets before or after laundry. I also have a stain removal kit handy.
  • Laundry Bag: The laundry bag fits perfectly below the ironing table.
If space permits you could set up your laundry area in wherever your washer dryer are placed. I have many more things to show you about the laundry area. Keep Watching and set up your own laundry area today!

Fridge Organization

Hi Friends!

A refrigerator is an essential and highly personalized appliance of each kitchen.  Today, I am going to show  ideas for basic fridge organizing.
Tips:
Organizing your refrigerator
  • Anti Slip Mats: So the first thing I did was to use an anti slip mat for each shelf in the fridge. This is especially useful for the door shelves where you store cans and want the labels to show on the front, but every time the door closes and opens the cans move, distorting the arrangement of the bottles.  Anti slip mats help items to stay firmly in place.

Easy Access: The second thing I want to show you are the 3 small boxes which contain chillies, garlic and curry leaves handily placed in the first shelf of the door. You can store it in a small tray too and just grab the tray when you start to cook. These are staple ingredients used almost every time I cook a meal.

Baskets/Trays and Organizers: Using baskets, trays and other organizers in the fridge is a cool idea. It may take up space in the fridge but I’d rather discard clutter and make up space anyway.   You can store curries and pastes of a particular cuisine in one basket so that it is easy to just grab and start cooking. There are many possibilities on how to use the bins and baskets. You just have to customize it to suit your style and requirement.
I keep air tight plastic boxes handy to easily manage storing, retrieving and discarding leftovers.

Few tips

  • Cover food before storing it in the fridge to eliminate leak of moisture from food into the air which makes the compressor to work harder to remove it.  Also open food may release smell
  • Acquaint yourself with the correct temperature at which a refrigerator must run in each season and apply the settings accordingly.
  • Check your refrigerator timely to discard food that have stayed there too long or are not consumable anymore.
  • Wipe spills in the fridge immediately. You can keep a magnetic holder at the side of the fridge to hold a handy cleaning sponge, scissors etc.
  • The door is the least cold part of the fridge hence it’s not a good idea to store highly perishable items on the door shelves. Milk can be store on the backside of the main shelves.
  • Take advantage and personalize the height of shelves since they are usually adjustable.
  • Remember that a fridge runs most efficiently when it storage is at capacity but not overcrowded.
  • If labeling is your style, go ahead and label items, baskets and boxes in the fridge.
  • Acquaint your self with the kinds of food that do not really require refrigeration.  This will clear up the prime space in your fridge.  For example potatoes, tomatoes, honey, onions, condiments, jams, dressings.

Organizing a rolling bar cart.

A rolling bar cart
Hi Friends, Today I am going to show you how I organized a rolling bar cart with things that we probably already have at home. You just need to gather items together and store in a rolling cart like this one which I already had.

So this cart has 3 shelves and a draw. At the bottom most shelf, I have my recipe binder. Ensure you have one to store your favorite recipe. Its really handy when you have one hands one. On the top shelf, I used industrial bins for storing ice tongs, snack cups, bottle opener and can opener. These bins are stackable and are for multi purpose use.

I used a shelf liner on the table and then assembled few syrups, straws, toothpicks, Coasters and a napkin stand. You can fold plain napkins in a fancy manner before you actually put them in the folder. I saw this style in a restaurant and adopted it here.

A rolling bar cart
Basic home bar essentials:-

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Bar Spoon
  • Jigger
  • Napkin Stand
  • Toothpicks
  • Snack Packets
  • Ice tongs
  • Ice bucket
  • Fancy ice trays
  • Decanter
  • Stirrer
  • Glassware
  • Muddler
  • Your favourite drinks/sodas/syrups/mixes/ fresh herbs and spices like mint, cinnamon etc.

Organizing tapes

Hi Friends,

Here how I organized tapes. I use a toothpick to mark from where I can start pulling the tape. This saves time. Also you can use a cardboard roller rod like this and hang it to hooks and store as many tapes you want.

Organizing a good night kit

Organizing a good night kit

How about creating this cute highly personalized Good Night Kit? Once you retire to bed after a long tiring day, you just don't feel like getting up to fetch anything you forget. So how about creating this Good Night Kit to store whatever you need around bedtime. I store a
  • lip balm,
  • Roll on headache reliever,
  •  Pair of socks,
  • Eye mask,
  •  Essential oil for aromatherapy,
  • I sprained my ankle recently so I need those pink bandages.

May be you have medicines to take before your sleep, or a small book to read, your glasses, maybe a small notebook and pen, This list could go on. Try it!

Organizing travel size bath products
Let me show you how I organize travel size items like
  • soaps
  • lotions
  • shower gels
  • shampoo
  • hair oil
  • toothpaste and so on.

  • I use this compact portable plastic box with drawers to organize what ever travel size items I collect. So this is a cool and convenient way to organize such items. You can find them very handy when you just run out of regular size items. Also when guests come over, you can keep this box in their bathroom. I am sure they will appreciate it. Since I've labeled the draws I know where to put the item back, once is used. Also when I add items to the draw, I know exactly where to store a particular item.

Organizing Pooja Items.

We all have organized Pooja in our houses. It takes time and effort to execute a Pooja. You can make it effortless by organizing the items needed so that you make effective use of items  purchased and ensure their reuse. So here is what I did. I purchased a tray and a dozen plastic bottles, they came with spoons.

I stored commonly used items in this and labeled the bottles. For example, Cotton diyas, Turmeric, Gulal, Kumkum and so on. Storing and Organizing items this way not only helps you find the items you require but also ensures minimal wastage and efficient reuse. Also you can just hand the tray over to the Bhramin performing the Pooja with open lids as shown above. The tray is for 40/- and the plastic bottles 80/- dozen.

I organized items required for hawan in this cute plastic box. I love these boxes. You can never have too many of them. I labeled each item inside the box.  So here's how the box looks when opened. You can use small trays to hold transparent bottles as shown and store other items as required. They look good, they are easy to access and totally hassle free.
You may require more Pooja items last minute while actually arranging the Pooja. Things like matchsticks, cloth napkins, spoons, bell, small plates and cups etc. So its a good idea to store these items too in a box and label accordingly. It is equally important to wrap up the items back into their boxes after the Pooja is done so that items are not misplaced or discarded.

Organizing a Home Office

Labeled Binder Clips to sort paper clutter
Friends, Let me show you how I organize paper clutter, mail and other documents on a daily basis. All of us have a stack of papers, bills, letters tucked in somewhere which require our attention. But even before we evolve past our laziness to acknowledge this stack, let me show you how to break up the task.

Organizing paper work
So as you can see in the picture, I have labeled the binder clips into various categories. I keep these clips in a tray large enough to hold A4 size papers. Whenever I have any document with me, I immediately clip it into the appropriate binder clip. This way, when
I have the time to look into all the paperwork, I am not overwhelmed to face the stack because I know that at least the documents are pre sorted.  The binder clips stack beautifully in a tray.

Organizing Pantry Supplies

Pantry Supplies
Today let me show you how I organize my kitchen pantry. Grouping items of similar nature into  makes sense. This is not a rule per se but a general guideline. Use your discretion while grouping items together for example scissors never stay in my stationary draw. They mostly belong to the kitchen because thats where I use scissors the most!

On the top shelf, I use colourful plastic baskets to group and store items like chips, noodles, dessert packs and pastas. The baskets are available in many attractive colours for about 60 rupees each but their prices have been steadily increasing. Also they come in different sizes. They have a convenient handle which makes retrieving the basket easy. I love these baskets and use them in my fridge too. I will show you how I organize my fridge in my upcoming posts.

In the bottom shelf I have used one tray for only for spices. One tray for all pickles and one tray for all kinds of masalas.

You can store frequently used items on shelves within your hands reach. Less frequently used items can go either in the top shelves or the bottom ones. Its a good idea to use tiered shelves when storing pantry items for better visibility and easy access.

Organizing Cotton Balls in an ice tray with lid

Let me show a cool way of organizing small cosmetic items like hair pins, rubber bands, saree pins, safety pins, cotton balls, nail polish, small makeup items and so on. These items are used almost every day and probably we just throw these items into a draw only to keep searching for a small pin when we need it the most.
